Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the bioprocessing production center of Merck Life Sciences (hereinafter referred to as Merck, CEO Matias Heinzel), a global science and technology leader, entering the Dungok district on the 29th.

In addition to Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key officials, including Merck, a member of the board of directors and CEO of Life Science Business Matthias Heinzel, Trade Minister Jeong In-kyo of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and German Ambassador to Korea Georg Wilfried Schmidt.

Merck's Asia-Pacific Bioprocessing Production Center is a production facility for raw materials used in bioprocessing and will be built with a size of about 43,000 square meters (about 13,000 pyeong) in the International Science and Business Belt Base District (Dungok) in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. It will be completed by the end of 2026 and will support the process development, clinical stage, and manufacture of biopharmaceuticals for pharmaceutical biotech companies and biotech companies across the Asia-Pacific.

Merck invested a total of 430 billion won (300 million euros) to build the center, the largest investment ever made by Merck in the Asia-Pacific region. It is expected to create about 300 new jobs by the end of 2028.

Merck Life Sciences CEO Matthias Heinzel said, "Korea is home to numerous institutions that carry out excellent level of research, manufacturing, and services in the field of biopharmaceutical development. Based on this, Merck was convinced that Korea was the most suitable country to realize Merck's targeted future in the Asia-Pacific region."

We are confident that the new bioprocessing production center, which will be established with the active support of the Korean government, will not only provide momentum to further revitalize the life science industry in Korea and the Asia-Pacific region, but also enable Merck's ultimate goal to provide a positive impact on life and health through science, he said.

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo said, "The meeting between Daejeon and Merck, where excellent professionals and companies are concentrated, is the beginning of a global bio hub that goes beyond Boston."
