The '2024 Korean Ginseng Festival', hosted by the Korea Ginseng Association and the Ginseng Self-Management Committee with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, was successfully held at Red Road R1 (Exit 7 of Hongik University Station) in Seoul on November 1-2, 2024.
Under the theme "Korea's Strength! Korean Ginseng in the World," the festival aimed to promote the excellence of Korea’s iconic agricultural product, Korean Ginseng, to domestic and international audiences. Taking place in Hongdae, a vibrant hub of youth culture and global trends, the event was designed as a celebration for both locals and visitors.
The festival kicked off with an official opening ceremony, followed by a variety of captivating performances and programs. Highlights included celebratory performances, recreational activities, and unique 'ginseng-themed busking' that entertained and engaged the audience. Visitors also enjoyed hands-on experiences through diverse ginseng-related content.
The venue featured a 'Ginseng Exhibition Hall', 'Korean Ginseng Photo Zones', and a 'Ginseng Cuisine Pavilion', showcasing the many facets of Korean Ginseng. Attendees had the chance to sample dishes made with ginseng and participate in interactive sessions to explore ginseng-based products and their applications, which received enthusiastic responses from the crowd.
Notably, the festival attracted participants of various nationalities, underscoring Korean Ginseng’s value as a global brand.
The 'Korean Ginseng Festival' traces its roots back to the 'Korean Ginseng Festival' held at Seoul Plaza in 2016, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Ginseng Association. The event was established to highlight the excellence of Korean Ginseng, foster collaboration among ginseng farmers and industry professionals, and enhance its global competitiveness. Over the years, it has grown into a significant cultural and promotional event.
On October 23, 2016, during the inaugural festival, prominent figures such as Kim Jae-soo (then Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs), Jeong Hwang-geun (then Administrator of the Rural Development Administration), Kim Byung-won (then President of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation), and Park Jung-wook (then President of KGC Ginseng Corporation) officially designated 'October 23 as Ginseng Day'.
The date was chosen to reflect the peak ginseng harvest season in October, and the phonetic similarity of the Korean word for ginseng (insam) to the numbers 2 and 3 in Korean. The day symbolizes Korea's status as the birthplace of ginseng and seeks to foster communication between producers and consumers while promoting the growth of the ginseng industry.
A representative of the Korea Ginseng Association remarked, “The Korean Ginseng Festival has become an important platform to showcase the value and appeal of Korean Ginseng to younger generations and global visitors. We will continue to create opportunities to promote Korean Ginseng worldwide and drive the development of the related industries.”
As a bridge between tradition and modernity, the '2024 Korean Ginseng Festival' promises to continue delighting and inspiring attendees, further solidifying Korean Ginseng’s legacy as a globally recognized agricultural treasure.
Meanwhile, Geumsan County, Chungcheongnam-do (Governor Park Beom-in), declared itself the "World Ginseng Capital" during the opening ceremony of the Geumsan World Ginseng Festival on October 3 last year. The county has been leading the ginseng industry in areas such as cultivation, processing, distribution, and cultural events, spearheading the globalization of Korean ginseng.
Additionally, the International Martial Arts Olympiad (President Oh No-gyun) held a launch ceremony on October 23 at Cheonggangjeong, a historically significant site located in Boksu-ri, Boksu-myeon, Geumsan County. The event was attended by over 30 organizing committee members, including Geumsan County Governor Park Beom-in, Organizing Chairman Yoo Tae-sik, General Director Jeon Yeon-seok, and National Chairman of I Love Hometown Gil Geum-ja. The ceremony aimed to promote the integration of Taekwondo (physical activities) and Geumsan ginseng (health food) for globalization and to ensure the successful hosting of the 2025 Geumsan Martial Arts Olympiad.
