Yong Ho-seong, 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), attended the opening ceremony of the ‘2025–2026 Korea-Japan-China Year of Cultural Exchange’ held in Tokyo, Japan, on April 14, marking the beginning of a new era for cultural cooperation in East Asia.

This two-year initiative follows the outcomes of the 9th Korea-Japan-China Trilateral Summit (May 27, 2024) and will be further formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding at the upcoming 15th Trilateral Culture Ministers’ Meeting (September 12, 2024).

The opening ceremony featured welcoming remarks from the three nations’ representatives, the unveiling of the official cultural exchange logo, the screening of a short film, and traditional performances.

Korea showcased mask dance and janggu (drum) dance performed by the National Gugak Center’s Dance and Folk Music Troupes. Japan presented Ainu dance and a tea ceremony demonstration. China featured Peking opera, singing, and traditional instrument performances.

Following this event, the three countries will engage in a wide range of cultural exchange programs in music, exhibitions, sports, and tourism throughout 2025 and 2026. Korea’s plans include a joint traditional music drama performance, a friendly Go match among the three nations, special cultural projects in the 2025–2026 East Asian Cultural Cities (Anseong and Andong), as well as calligraphy exhibitions, classical music collaborations, and a youth art exchange. Japan and China will also host youth-focused events such as young musicians’ concerts, highlighting their commitment to fostering future generations of cultural ambassadors.
