To commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Singapore, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST, Minister Yoo In-chon) is hosting a yearlong series of cultural exchange events. Kicking off the celebration, a performance of ‘Jongmyo Jeryeak’, Korea’s royal ancestral ritual music, will take place on April 4 and 5 at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore.
Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1975, Korea and Singapore have fostered a strong cultural relationship, signing a Cultural Agreement (1995), a Memorandum of Understanding on Sports Cooperation (1997), and launching the Singapore Content Business Center (2024). This year marks a milestone for both nations, and the commemorative cultural events aim to further deepen mutual understanding and people-to-people exchange.
The Jongmyo Jeryeak performance is hosted by the MCST and jointly organized by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Singapore, and the National Gugak Center. It is especially significant as this is the first time that Jongmyo Jeryeak has been officially invited to the Esplanade’s “A Tapestry of Sacred Music” festival, which features sacred music traditions from around the world.
