South Chungcheong Province Governor Kim Tae-heum proposed to global climate leaders to establish a "global methane reduction roadmap."

Governor Kim, who is on a business trip to the U.S. to share the province's carbon neutrality initiative with the world and seek ways to expand cooperation with central and local government representatives, attended the 2030 Global Methane Reduction Strategy Debate at Glasshouse in New York on the 23rd (local time) and gave a keynote speech.

The discussion was held as part of New York Climate Week by the Klimit Group to discuss reducing methane emissions by sector and seeking ways to advance the global methane pledge.

At the meeting, Governor Kim said, "Chungnam has established a roadmap for methane reduction for the first time in the Korean local government," adding, "We will invest $1.09 billion by 2030 to achieve a 35% reduction."

Governor Kim said, "84% of methane emitted from Chungnam is generated in the agricultural and livestock industry, and Chungnam is the No. 1 livestock farm in Korea, which raises 500,000 cattle, 2.3 million pigs, and 32 million chickens. The problem is that most livestock farms are small and scattered, making it difficult to scientifically manage odors, diseases and greenhouse gases."

Governor Kim introduced the smart livestock complex, which the province is pushing for shortly after the launch of the 8th popular election, and stressed that "it was difficult to push ahead with the project due to local residents' opposition and politicians' political strife," and that "the project will be reduced to 60,000 and then gradually expanded through communication with local residents."
