On the afternoon of the 3rd, Yoo Deok-won, the Vice Mayor of Daejeon, met with Akimoto Katsushiro, the Mayor of Sapporo, at Sapporo City Hall. Yoo congratulated the city on the 75th Sapporo Snow Festival and suggested launching commemorative activities this year to mark the 15th anniversary of their sister city relationship, including mutual attendance at festivals held in both cities.

Yoo stated, “Among Daejeon’s 39 sister and friendly cities, Sapporo is the most active in exchanges. Recently, the opening of direct flights from Cheongju Airport has made it even easier for citizens of both cities to visit each other.”

Mayor Akimoto expressed gratitude for the visit by Daejeon’s delegation and said, “I remember the excitement of the Daejeon 0-hour festival when I visited Daejeon in 2023.” He added, “This year marks the meaningful 15th anniversary of our sister city relationship, and I hope there will be even more visits and exchanges. We are planning to send a Sapporo delegation to Daejeon during the 0-hour festival in August.”

Vice Mayor Yoo also mentioned that a special booth will be set up at the Sapporo Snow Festival to promote the 15th anniversary of the sister city relationship, introducing Daejeon to both domestic and international visitors at the festival.

The Sapporo Snow Festival, which started in 1950 when local high school students built six snow statues at Odori Park, has now been a major event in Japan for 75 years.
