The Korean American Association of Phoenix (President Jin Jae-man) and the Sanmaru Hiking Club co-hosted the 141st Arbor Day celebration on April 1 at 325 Corea Street, Rincon, New Mexico, a historic site where the Santa Fe Railroad Company provided a shelter for Korean laborers in 1884.
Although the initial goal was to plant 141 pine trees in honor of the 141st anniversary, participants managed to plant 51 pine trees, 2 forsythias, and 1 peach tree. The event faced challenges due to a Chihuahuan Desert sandstorm, but attendees later gathered at Pepper Pot Mexican Restaurant to reflect on the event’s significance.
In his commemorative speech, President Jin Jae-man expressed his gratitude to the Sanmaru Hiking Club and especially thanked all those who supported the event. He also discussed the potential for a mutual driver's license recognition agreement between New Mexico, Korea, and Taiwan, encouraging further research and dialogue on the matter.
Joy Garrett, a Taiwanese-American aide to a New Mexico State Representative, delivered congratulatory remarks, emphasizing that uncovering the historical significance of Corea Street will greatly benefit cultural and tourism exchanges between Korea and New Mexico. She also pledged to advocate for the inclusion of Asian immigration history in U.S. middle and high school history textbooks by 2028.
