Lee Sang-deok, Commissioner of the Overseas Koreans Agency (OKA), visited Paris, France, on May 15–16 and held the agency’s first overseas roundtable with Korean adoptees. France is home to the largest population of Korean adoptees in Europe.

The event brought together around 50 adoptees, including members of Korea’s Roots Association—the oldest adoptee organization in France—and the Korea Nantes Association, as well as adoptees active in French society.

In his welcome remarks, Lee Jae-dong, president of the Roots Association, expressed gratitude to the OKA for arranging a dedicated gathering with adoptees. He also announced plans for a nationwide event across France to mark the 39th anniversary of the association’s founding in September, with support from the agency.

Jeon Heon-joo, head of the Korea Nantes Association, stated, “Many adoptees view Korea as their root and work to promote it in their countries of residence.” She introduced her organization’s activities, including Korean cultural events, communal meals, and celebrations for Lunar New Year and Chuseok.

Commissioner Lee expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet adoptees in person. He praised their achievements and their efforts to reconnect with Korean language and culture, saying he felt both pride and a deep sense of responsibility.
