The Korea Overseas Koreans Agency (Commissioner Lee Sang-deok) held a special meeting on July 14 with ethnic Korean political scientists participating in the 28th World Congress of Political Science, often referred to as the “Olympics of political science.”
Held every two years, the congress provides a global platform for political scientists to present research and foster academic exchange. Korea is the only Asian country to have hosted the event twice—first in 1997 and again this year. The current president of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) is Professor Pablo Oñate of the University of Valencia in Spain.
The Seoul congress opened on July 12 at COEX in Gangnam, drawing over 3,000 participants from more than 80 countries. Among them are around 170 ethnic Korean scholars from 20 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, China, Germany, and Australia. Notably, Lee Tae-goo, president of the American Political Science Association, is also participating.
To mark the occasion, the Korea Overseas Koreans Agency and the Korean Political Science Association (President Kim Bum-soo, Seoul National University) co-hosted an official reception for overseas Korean political scientists on July 14 at the Sono Felice Convention Center near COEX. Around 100 scholars and researchers attended the event, which served as a platform for connection and dialogue.
