To mark the 80th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation, officials from the Korean Diaspora Agency (Commissioner Lee Sang-deok), together with Koryoin and Chinese compatriots living in Korea, carried out joint community service at a comprehensive welfare center in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.
On the 11th, Lee Ki-seong, Director General of Overseas Korean Policy, staff members, and 15 representatives from the Korean-Koryoin Association (President Jung Young-soon), the National Association of Korean Compatriots (President Kim Ho-rim), and the Chinese Compatriots One Mind Federation (President Kim Se-gwang) volunteered at the center’s toy library, disinfecting and organizing toys.
Since the beginning of this year, the agency has been conducting community service projects every two months with Chinese and Koryoin compatriots, who make up the majority of overseas Koreans residing in Korea. This was the first time that members of both groups participated together.
Koryoin compatriots in Korea (around 110,000) are descendants of those who migrated to Central Asia and supported Korea’s independence movement. Chinese compatriots (around 670,000) also have a history of contributing to the country’s anti-Japanese independence struggle.
