South Chungcheong Province Announces Special Carbon Neutral Economy Policy at the Korea-China-Japan Carbon Neutral Policy Forum

Chungcheongnam-do Province shared its policies and achievements with China and Japan for about a year and five months since the declaration of the "Carbon Neutral Economy Special" and joined hands to achieve early carbon neutrality between 2050 and 2060 between Korea, China and Japan.

The province participated in the "3rd Korea-China-Japan Carbon Neutral Policy Forum" organized by the Korea-China-Japan Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) at Lotte Hotel in Seoul on the 7th to discuss accelerating carbon neutrality through digital technological innovation.

The forum was held in the order of Session 1, Korea, China and Japan, and policy best practices by carbon-neutral countries, how to accelerate the implementation of carbon-neutral goals through digital innovation, and presentations and Q&A on the theme of achieving carbon-neutrality and coexisting just transition in Session 3.

Nam Seung-hong, head of the Carbon Neutral Economy Division, presented the session 3 and announced major policies such as △ enacting a special law on supporting areas for the abolition of coal-fired power plants △ enacting an ordinance to support the revitalization of a carbon-neutral economy △ signing a win-win agreement between labor, management and the government for a carbon-neutral economy.

He then shared with officials from each country the contents of the project that the province is focusing on, such as energy conversion, industrial structure conversion, and hydrogen infrastructure construction.

At the meeting, Nam said, "We will do our best to help Chungnam become a global carbon-neutral hub that leads Korea's carbon neutrality," and emphasized, "I hope you will continue to pay attention to Chungnam's move toward carbon neutrality in the future."

UN officials, including Japan, showed high interest in the carbon-neutral economic policy announced by the province and expressed their desire to learn more.

The results of the forum will be presented at the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations Asia-Pacific Economic and Social Committee and the 25th Korea-China-Japan Environment Ministers' Meeting.

The Korea-China-Japan Carbon Neutrality Policy Forum has been held annually since 2021 by major East Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Japan to share their policies to realize carbon neutrality, spread consensus, and promote each country.
